L. ALANIZ
Milagro Communications Group senior partner, Robert
Alaniz is a dynamic and seasoned senior public affairs/strategic
communications executive with extensive supervisory experience
and exceptional success in conceiving, planning, developing,
and executing strategic and tactical public/community affairs
initiatives, coalition building programs and campaigns that
drive top-line performance and bottom-line results. A results
driven practitioner with extensive background in public affairs,
governmental affairs, community relations, issues management,
coalition development, strategic communications, media relations,
he has developed a comprehensive knowledge of how to leverage
public outreach strategies to reach client goals, build community
& legislative support and grow new business opportunities.
Most recently Mr. Alaniz was the vice president of communications
and public affairs for The California Endowment, one of the
nation’s largest health foundations. Prior to joining The
Endowment, Alaniz was director of WellPoint’s Multi-Cultural
and Foundation Communications, where he was responsible for
all emerging market communications, media relations and public
relations for WellPoint, Inc. and the WellPoint Foundation.
Previously, he served as regional vice president of Corporate
Communications for WellPoint, Inc. where he oversaw the company’s
public relations operations in California, Colorado and Nevada.
Alaniz brings to clients a wealth of experience and expertise
in strategic communications, public affairs, crisis management, litigation
support, issues management and coalition building. While
serving as a management director at the international public
relations firm of Hill and Knowlton he helped manage the communications
and public affairs activities for a diverse array of clients,
including the California Department of Health Services, National
Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), California
Department of Consumer Affairs, Univision Communications,
Schering-Plough, and the Alliance to Save California Jobs.
As a senior vice president with the Rogers Group, he provided
strategic counsel to the RAND Corporation, California Community
Foundation, LucasFilm, and USC Kenneth Norris Cancer Hospital.
He also served as director of Communications for the Campaign
to Elect Gloria Molina in 1986-1987, which resulted in her
successful bid for the Los Angeles City Council. Subsequently,
he served as Molina’s director of Communications from 1991-1995.
Alaniz is also one of the nation's foremost media skills trainers
and is constantly sought by corporate CEO’s elected officials
and organizational leaders for his media strategy and message
development expertise as well as his skills in preparing clients
facing crisis scenarios. His has trained hundreds of corporate
leaders and elected officials over the years to deal with
tough reporters and crisis situations.
Alaniz has also received numerous honors in his field, including
a CIPRA “Creativity in Public Relations Award” presented
by Inside PR Magazine for best public affairs/issues
management campaign; an IBAC ACE Awards 1st Place, National
Awards presented by the International Association of Business
Communicators for outstanding public policy/coalition building
campaigns; a PRSA/LA PRISM Award 1st Place presented
by the Public Relations Society of America/Los Angeles Chapter
for best issues management campaign; and a Hill and Knowlton
at Its Best, Media Campaign to keep the Houston Astros
baseball team in Houston, Texas
